7 Things to do Around Pocatello in the Winter

Despite the chill in the air, winter in Pocatello offers a blend of outdoor adventures and indoor activities that make it easy for everyone to find an escape from schoolwork. Our blog on why you need breaks outlines the importance of stepping away from your work and engaging in other activities. Here are some of the top activities you can participate in this winter.

  1. Hit the Slopes at Pebble Creek Ski Area. Just a short drive from Pocatello, Pebble Creek Ski Area offers a variety of terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. You will enjoy breathtaking views of the Portneuf Valley as you glide down numerous groomed runs or test your skills in the terrain park. When you're done or just need a break to warm up and fill up, you can stop into the lodge for some famous Pebble Creek fries or a number of other tasty treats.  While the mountain does have some rentals available, you can also pick up gear on campus at the Outdoor Adventure Center!
  2. Another great way to embrace winter is a visit to East Fork Mink Creek Nordic Center. For a more gentle winter experience, head to the other side of the gap and visit the Nordic Center. This serene setting offers groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, allowing you to immerse yourself in the peaceful beauty of the snow-covered forest without the added adrenaline of flying down a mountain or riding a chair lift.
  3. One of the simplest ways to enjoy winter in Pocatello is to take a stroll through Old Town Pocatello. Stroll through the charming streets of Old Town Pocatello during the holiday season and immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere. Visiting the area at night will yield the benefit of light winter decorations, unique old lamp posts, and the brilliant colors of the historic Chief Theater sign that stands 50 feet over Main Street. Admire the twinkling lights, enjoy live music performances, and savor delicious treats from local shops and restaurants.
  4. Take a Cooking Class at ISU. Many people don’t know that ISU offers a variety of cooking classes throughout the year. This is a great way to hone your skills in the kitchen, connect with friends and family, and explore new cuisines. To learn more and register for one of these classes click here. Even if you don’t feel like cooking, you can still enjoy a wide variety of cuisines in Pocatello
  5. Experience Ice Fishing: For a unique winter experience, try ice fishing on one of Idaho’s frozen lakes or reservoirs. American Falls Reservoir, located about 30 miles from town, is a popular spot for ice fishing, offering a variety of trout and perch species. Drill a hole in the ice, cast your line, and wait for the tug of a fish. You can also utilize the Portneuf wellness complex for ice fishing in addition to the many other activities the complex offers.
  6. Catch a movie at one of Pocatello’s three movie theaters. Pocatello is home to the Bengal Theater, The Reel Theater, and an AMC Theater, all of which are great choices especially when paired with dinner beforehand!
  7. While Pocatello is known for its outdoor activities, there are a number of businesses that offer exciting activities that only require you to be outside long enough to get from your car to the building. Some local favorites include Heber Hatchets Axe Throwing, Geronimo’s Trampoline Park, Eagle Swing- golf simulator, and Deleta Escape Rooms

Some of us can’t wait for the snow to start falling, and some of us dread the day that we see the first snowflake in the sky. No matter which side of the debate you are on, however, Pocatello has a variety of great opportunities for everyone to get out and enjoy themselves during the winter months.
