6 Creative Dorm Room Meals on a Budget

Dorm life can be challenging, and one of the biggest adjustments for students is often finding ways to eat healthy and affordable meals while living in a small space without access to a full kitchen. However, with a little creativity and planning, it is possible to create nutritious and delicious meals in your dorm room. Here are some ideas for easy and healthy dorm room meals.

Microwave scrambled eggs:

Scrambled eggs are a classic, but you may not know how to make them in your dorm without a burner and skillet. Beat your desired number of eggs, 1-2 teaspoons milk, salt, and pepper in a microwave-safe bowl, and cook for 45 seconds. Stir, and cook for another 30-45 seconds until set. You can use a variety of toppings to make your eggs even better. Try adding cheese, spinach, ham, bacon bits, bell peppers, hot sauce, tomatoes, or any combination of things to take your eggs to the next level. If you like eggs but you don’t like eating them by themselves, try wrapping them in a tortilla or putting them on top of toast.

Oatmeal:

Oatmeal is a quick and easy breakfast option that can be made in a microwave or overnight in the fridge. Simply add ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats and  ½ cup water or milk in a bowl and microwave for 90 seconds on high, or until desired consistency is reached. If making overnight oats, the same ratios can be used, but instead of microwaving you will place your mixture in the fridge overnight to combine. Once the oatmeal is done, add the desired amount of your favorite toppings to make it your own! Here are some combinations to try:

  1. Almond Joy oatmeal: Chocolate chips, Coconut Flakes, and Almonds
  2. Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal: Brown Sugar, Pecans, Pumpkin Pie Spice, Vanilla, and Cream.
  3. Apple Pie Oatmeal: Apples, Cinnamon, and Walnuts
  4. Cheesecake Oatmeal: White Chocolate, Nuts, and Cranberries
  5. Elvis Oatmeal: Peanut Butter, Banana, Brown Sugar
  6. Carrot Cake Oatmeal: Carrot, Raisins, and Brown Sugar

Sandwiches:

Sandwiches are a classic meal that can be easily made in a dorm room when all you have is a mini-fridge. Here are some combinations to try:

  1. Turkey and Cheddar
  2. Ham and Swiss
  3. Roast Beef and Provolone
  4. For Vegetarian or Vegan options, use any combination of the following: cucumbers, spinach, sprouts, bell peppers, avocados, hummus, cream cheese, or regular cheese.

Baked potatoes:

Baked potatoes can be easily made in the microwave. Pierce the potato with a fork 2-3 times on each side, then microwave it for 5-7 minutes or until desired firmness is reached. Once cooked, add as many toppings as your heart desires. Some of the best toppings include cheese, butter, sour cream, bacon bits, leftover soups/stews/chili, and chives. Baked potatoes make for a filling and delicious meal that requires little effort.

Instant noodle bowl:

Although instant noodles are often thought of as unhealthy, there are ways you can make them healthier. You can add meats like ham, chicken, beef, or even eggs if you are trying to add more protein to your meal. You can also add vegetables for a boost in fiber and other important nutrients. Try adding spinach, mushrooms, carrots, bean sprouts, cabbage, watercress, or even scallions to the mix for a more nutritious meal.

Microwavable meals:

While frozen meals aren't always the healthiest option, they can be helpful in a pinch. Try looking for options that are high in protein and fiber and low in saturated fats and sodium to be more health conscious. Quinoa bowls and brown rice dishes are good options to consider, but frozen burritos, hot pockets, or breakfast sandwiches are better than nothing if you’re rushing out the door to class.

While dorm room living may pose some challenges, there are plenty of healthy and easy meal options available. With a little creativity and some planning, you can create nutritious and satisfying meals right in your dorm room without breaking the bank.
