Average Econ Class Size

With small class sizes, economics students have the opportunity to gain a more personalized experience in their courses, working closely with professors in a private school-style setting.

Local Economic Research

Each semester students participate in various local economic research projects. One recent project allowed students to study the potential economic impact restoration of Pocatello’s Portneuf River might have on the city. The class evaluated potential benefits the revitalization projects could bring to the local economy and later presented their findings to the city’s key representatives. The student’s research will be used to prioritize city projects.

“This was not just an assignment, it gave us the opportunity to look at real projects happening now in Pocatello. The project gave us a view of how we can use economic principles in a real-world application.” Davis Taylor, Economics Student

The Economics Club

As a member-driven group, the Economics Club provides students with opportunities to go on field trips, compete in events, explore non-traditional applications of economics, and learn from hosted alumni speakers. The club has hosted nationally recognized Stand-Up Economist Yoram Bauman as well as participated in a private tour of the Salt Lake City Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank. The club also continuously hosts successful ISU economics alumni speakers who share their tips for post-collegiate success.

Careers in Economics

A degree in economics opens up a variety of career and higher education opportunities. Students often take on roles in business, even opting to complete their education with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Students may also become economic consultantsresearchers, professors, educators, or work for positions in government or in the not-for-profit sector. Economics is also a common undergraduate stepping stone for a legal degree; in fact a 2012-2013 analysis indicated that LSAT test scores were higher among economics majors.

The American Economic Association is an excellent resource for additional information about careers in economics, visit the AEA website for great tools, videos and more.
