The Gift of Giving Back

November 5, 2026

For many people, the holidays are a joyful celebration with family and friends. However, for some, it means a month of stressing over whether they will be able to afford presents and a meal for their families. Many places around Pocatello offer resources for families to get food, shelter, and presents for their children, but they wouldn’t be able to do this without volunteers. If you are looking for a way to give back to the community this year and help those in need, here
are some of the best ways to do so.

Every year, The Idaho Foodbank sends out thousands of meals to families in need for Thanksgiving. In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, they are always looking for help collecting, packaging, and distributing food boxes to the community. If you would like a more physical activity, Cranksgiving is November 21 at 10:00 a.m. This fun event is run by Barrie’s Ski and Sports, where cyclists bike turkeys down from Barrie’s to The Idaho Foodbank. If you are looking for a quick way to help out, donating cans of food or other nonperishables is always appreciated.

Toys for Tots is always looking for people interested in volunteering. This organization collects Christmas presents that parents and guardians are then able to shop through for free. This does an amazing job of making sure that no kid in our community goes without Christmas presents each year. They are always looking for people to collect presents, sort and organize them, and help parents when they come in for shopping. Toy distribution runs December 4 to 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and they welcome volunteers whenever they are available. Toys for Tots also always needs donations for all age groups, including toys, clothing, winter apparel, and books. They are especially in need of lots of infant/toddler items and items for teens that go quickly.

Another great volunteer spot in Pocatello is the Giving Machines. The Giving Machines are giant kiosks where people are able to pay for specific items needed in the community, like a meal, winter clothing, or a free checkup at a medical facility. All proceeds go back to local nonprofits, allowing them to make an even greater impact in the community. The Giving Machines are open from November 13 to 29, and volunteers are needed any time from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Volunteers help answer questions and help donors find specific items. If you are willing to donate money, this is a great chance to give directly back to the community.

Pocatello is one of the most compassionate places where many community members step up to help others. The holidays are a difficult time for many, and having the opportunity to get presents, necessities, and food for their families takes a lot of stress away. If you can, find a way to give back this holiday season and see how much of a positive impact you can make on the lives of those around you. There are many volunteer opportunities, ways to donate, and places to make an impact; find one that suits you and have a happy holiday.
