The CommLab is a spacious and state of the art facility that was made possible through a gift from Sara Ifft and her belated husband, G. Nicholas Ifft, who was president and general manager of the Idaho State Journal from 1965 to 1984. The facility includes computer stations, study areas, a group meeting room, presentation rooms with video recording/PowerPoint technology, and a tutorial instruction area.

This studio is shared between KISU-TV and the Department of Communication, Media, and Persuasion. It is equipped with three broadcast quality high-definition studio cameras, including one remote-controlled camera, which are linked into one of the most technologically advanced control rooms in the Northwest. The studio features multiple sets, including an interview set, a green screen, and a news desk which is used to produce student programs airing on Idaho Public Television. The facility is also equipped with a multi-channel video server for recording and playback, a digital video switcher, HD graphics generator, teleprompter, and digital audio mixing board.

The Department of Communication, Media, and Persuasion also provides students with access to a number of other computer labs and facilities, including the Large Media Classroom (Frazier 319), a general-purpose lab classroom completed as part of the merger of Communication and Rhetorical Studies with Mass Communication, the Graphic Design Lab (LA 135), home to many graphic design and digital imaging courses, and the Ifft Newsroom (LA 175), a general-purpose lab which primarily serves as a writing studio for students in multiplatform journalism, advertising, and public relations courses.

The Pinyon Jay Press is a collaborative venture between the Department of Communication, Media, and Persuasion and the Department of English and Philosophy. Housed in the VisComm Experimental Lab in the Liberal Arts Building of Idaho State University, it provides faculty and students the opportunity to learn the art of fine letterpress printing and to explore various forms of expression that involve image, text, or a combination of the two. Several times a year Pinyon Jay Press holds special events such as guest lectures and workshops to promote the knowledge of letterpress printing and related fields such as typography, book design, broadside production, and visual culture in general.

The department’s Photo Media Studio is located in the Fine Arts Building and has over 1800-square feet of working area. The Studio consists of two fully-equipped shooting bays, a prop room, and a post-production area. In addition to new photographic flash lighting systems, each bay has its own iMac computer loaded with current industry capture software. The post-production area boasts its own 27” iMac and professional Epson large-format printer.
