FAQs: FAQs
Who we are:
Our Custodial team clean and maintain all the academic areas on campus - more than 3 million square feet daily – with each of our custodians individually maintaining between 20,000 to 42,000 square feet daily.
Our team consists of a rich diversity of more than 70 professionals – many of whom are also attending courses and programs as students while employed within our department. We also have between 20 and 40 part-time student employees.
We attend frequent training workshops and monthly safety meetings to stay up to date on the latest equipment, cleaning materials, and APPA Cleaning Standards.
What we do:
Custodial Hours
The majority of our team work during the evening hours Monday through Friday, although we do have
on-call staff during the day to serve any custodial related needs. Please contact our office during regular
campus business hours for any custodial needs such as isolated spill cleanups or restrooms that need
additional supplies.
Building Lockdown
We are also responsible for evening door lockdowns and ensuring that rooms and buildings are secured
nightly. If any accommodation for special events is needed please feel free to contact our office to
request specific needs.
Misc.
We have numerous specialized teams with specific training and equipment to assist with everything
from hazardous material cleanups, washing exterior building windows during the summer, and
increased hygiene and sanitizing of campus computer labs on a nightly basis.
Please keep in mind that, while we do service all academic and many public campus spaces, some areas
such as laboratory spaces, faculty and staff offices, and other areas containing sensitive information or
materials will receive different standards of cleaning for the sake of safety and security. Additionally,
projects such as carpet cleaning services or floor waxing of many spaces are regularly completed –
however additional services can be provided by submitting an E-Waste request. Please note that these
additional services may need your department index depending on the scope of the project.
Who we are:
Our recycling team works diligently to ensure that recycling is consistently collected across campus and sent for processing. As part of ISU’s increased drive to be a leader in sustainability we pride ourselves in our contribution to reduce plastic and other waste. Our recycling Leadworker keeps up to date on the current education and market for recyclable materials and the team can frequently be seen making their rounds collecting materials.
We also work closely with the IT Services department to coordinate the processing of e-waste related materials. Our team hand sorts all collected recycling and deconstructs all electronic materials by hand to ensure that as much of the electronics can be recycled as possible. We also provide services of shredding hard drives to help keep our campus information safe from potential online risks or threats.

“Why wasn’t the recycling in my office taken out?”
Most buildings have central collection areas (CCA) where we ask that small office recycling bins be deposited by faculty and staff. The custodians frequently take the collected materials from the CCA to the outside pick-up areas to be collected.
“What areas does Custodial service?”
We service all academic and many public campus spaces performing cleaning maintenance. Some additional areas such as laboratory spaces, faculty and staff offices, and other areas containing sensitive information or materials will receive different standards of cleaning or frequency for the sake of safety and security.
“One of our faculty or staff are retiring/leaving – how can I request larger recycling bins or deep cleaning of the office?”
Submitting an E-Works Request with the details of the location needing service and what you would like to see accomplished is a great way to communicate these needs to our team.
“My lab needs paper towels or soap – who do I contact to order more?”
Reaching out to the Bengal Depot through their online order form or by phone (x3515) is a great way to ensure that you receive the products that you are needing. Please keep in mind that you will need to provide an index for billing.
“My office needs vacuuming – how do I communicate this to my custodial team?”
Feel free to reach out to our building custodian in person, call our office (x2394), or fill out an E-Works form and we will be happy to help.
