Emeritus Faculty Status
Emeritus status is an honor extended to retired Idaho State University Faculty in recognition of their dedicated service and outstanding contributions to the institution. This designation allows retired faculty members to maintain a formal connection with the University and continue to engage in scholarly and community activities, as appropriate. Emeritus status is not granted automatically; it is conferred following a formal review and approval process.
Eligibility for Emeritus Status
Emeritus status may be granted to University Faculty members who meet either of the following criteria at the time of retirement:
1. Years of Service

A minimum of 15 years of dedicated service to Idaho State University.
2. Exceptional Contributions

Substantial contributions to the faculty member’s field of specialization, or
-
Demonstrated excellence in scholarship and competence, or
-
Creative accomplishments of recognized outstanding quality.
Faculty eligible for this honor are those who meet the definition of “Faculty” as outlined in ISUPP 4050 Academic Rank and Other Appointments.
Initiating a Request
A request for Emeritus status may be initiated in one of two ways:

By the retiring Faculty member, or
-
By colleagues within the faculty member’s department.
Requests should follow the process and timelines outlined by the Office of Academic Affairs. Required materials may include a letter of nomination or request and supporting documentation demonstrating eligibility.
Review and Approval Process
To confer Emeritus status, recommendations must be provided to the University President from the following four University entities:

Department Level: The department in which the Emeritus-status candidate is affiliated.

College Level: The Dean of the College or Library in which the candidate is affiliated..

The Faculty Senate

The Provost
Once all recommendations have been submitted, the University President makes the final decision regarding the conferral of Emeritus status.
Special Considerations

Academic administrators who hold Faculty rank may be granted Emeritus status either at their faculty rank or at their administrative title.

The Faculty Senate may recommend the title President Emeritus to the Idaho State Board of Education for a retiring ISU President who has completed at least ten years of honorable service to the University.
Rights and Privileges of Emeritus Faculty
Emeritus Faculty may be granted the following privileges:

Continued scholarly activities under the name of Idaho State University.

Access to laboratory space, office space, or departmental resources (as available and approved by the department).

Attendance at Faculty meetings (non-voting).

Participation in academic processions at University ceremonies.

Use of the University library and facilities normally available to Faculty.

Attendance at University social and ceremonial functions.

The designation of “Emeritus” is added to the faculty rank held at the time of retirement.
Emeritus Faculty are also recognized in the University Undergraduate or Graduate Catalog.
Limitations

Emeritus Faculty do not hold voting rights in Faculty governance.

Access to office, laboratory, or departmental resources is subject to availability and approval by the recommending department.
