Audition for the Farm Bureau Summer Theatre Production of
The School of Rock - The Musical
Rock got no reason, rock got no rhyme… You better get me to school on time! Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock – The Musical is a two-hour, two-act show (plus intermission), based on the hit movie. The tuner follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight–A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out?
Lloyd Webber produced the stage musical on Broadway and in the West End, penning 14 new numbers for the show, which additionally features all of the original songs from the movie. The composer’s tracks “You’re in the Band” and “Stick it to the Man” are well on their way to becoming rock solid standards, while the finale with “Teacher’s Pet” brings audiences to their feet, eight shows a week.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock – The Musical, with its sensational live kids’ rock band, is a loving testimony to the transforming power of music. May the spirit of rock be with all who pledge allegiance to Lloyd Webber’s newest hit!

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang - Summary & Character Breakdown
Set in the present day in a Pennsylvania farm house where Vanya and his step-sister Sonia have lived all their lives, jointly caring for their ailing, doddering parents for many years while their movie star sister, Masha, was gallivanting around the world. The play takes place on a weekend when Masha shows up with a new young boyfriend, Spike. Vanya, Masha and Sonia were named after Chekhov characters by their college professor parents. The play is a mix of comedy and drama with elements derived from works of Anton Chekhov such as a vestigial cherry orchard, the performance of an "avant-garde" play by one of the main characters, and themes of old vs. new generations, real vs. assumed identities, the challenges of a woman growing older after successes in a career that seems to be ending, the hope and carelessness of youth, intrafamilial rivalries, and the possible loss of an ancestral home.
CHARACTER:
VANYA – Late 40’s to mid 50’s. A gay man who lives with his step-sister Sonia. He took care of their aging parents over a long time and didn’t do much of what he’d like to have done with his life, but is resigned, more or less. He acts as the peacemaker between his two sisters. Seeking a very strong actor, great with language and timing, excellent comedic skills.
SONIA – Late 40’s to mid-50s. Vanya’s step-sister living with him. Discontent, upset, regretful. Never had a romantic life. Volatile, and angry that her “pretty” sister, Masha, has had a life. Must be a very strong comedic actress with great language skills and wide emotional range. Ability to impersonate Maggie Smith is a huge plus.
MASHA – Late 40’s to late 50’s. Vanya’s other sister. A glamorous and successful actress who goes gallivanting around the world. A bit grandiose, but also charming. Has had five failed marriages and has recently taken up a romantic relationship with a young actor, Spike. Has been paying everybody’s bills.
SPIKE – Mid-late 20s. An aspiring actor and Masha’s new companion. Very conventionally attractive, friendly, and confident, but self-absorbed. Seeking a strong comedic actor also good at physical comedy. Actor must be comfortable being dressed in bikini-style underwear on stage.
NINA – Early to late 20s. Lovely, sincere, would-be actor, visiting her aunt and uncle next door to Vanya and Sonia. Star-struck by Masha and energetic in her enthusiasm. Responds to Vanya and is kind to him.
CASSANDRA – 20-55. Cleaning lady and soothsayer, she often bursts into prophecy, her diction sounding like Greek tragedy mixed with contemporary thoughts and references. Her seeing the future is somewhat truthful, though not always 100% accurate. She often criticizes her employers Vanya and Sonia, but at the core wants to help them. Requires an actor with strong verbal dexterity with great comedic skills.
