Idaho Accelerator Center

QuarkNet for Educators  ISU Physics

How do I apply?
Applications will be accepted from high school teacher that teach at least one section of physics.  Teachers who teach in the states of Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Oregon will be eligible to apply at ISU.  Other interested teachers should visit the national QuarkNet site to find the program which services their state.

Teachers wishing to attend must print, complete, and return the application form and provide both a current resume/vitae and a letter of recommendation from their principal or department chair.

What is QuarkNet?
QuarkNet is a professional development program funded by the National Science Foundation and the US Department of Energy. Teachers work on particle physics experiments during a summer and join a cadre of scientists and teachers working to introduce some aspects of their research into their classrooms.

Why Idaho State University?
Idaho State University holds a unique place among Western Universities.  Its physics program boast close ties with both the Idaho National Laboratory and the Idaho Accelerator Center.  These ties provide the opportunity to do cutting edge research in related areas.  Researchers explore practical applications of high energy physics while providing support to research in related fields including medical isotope production, particle detector development, photon activation analysis, and pulsed power applications.

What is the Associate Teacher Institute?
The Associate Teacher Institute is a one week residential workshop which brings together physics teachers from the Western Region who wish learn about particle physics.  Teachers will have the opportunity to work with physicists in one of these areas of interest with the goal of transferring that experience to the classroom  for the benefit of their students.

What Benefits will I Receive?
The ISU/QuarkNet Associate Teacher Institute offers the following support for teachers:
  •     Stipend of $100.00 per day for four days
  •     Lodging on the ISU campus for the length of
        the institute
  •     A travel allowance for those teachers traveling over
150 miles (one way) to the institute.
  •     A research opportunity in a unique environment
  •     Resources for transferring your experience to the
classroom including a cosmic ray detector system
  •     Up to 2 ISU Graduate Credits  offered at low cost
