5210 Healthy Children

One of our main initiatives here at the Institute of Rural Health is teaching children and families the importance of healthy habits in their daily life. One of our primary tools to do so is the 5210 program. Each of these numbers stands for one healthy habit you can add to your life to make little improvements every day!

5210:

5: Five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

A Serving size of fruits and vegetables is approximately the same size as your closed fist. Add something green to your diet to give your body the vitamins and nutrients it needs.

2: Two hours or less of recreational screen time daily.

We live in an age of heavy social media use. This program recommends less than two hours spent outside of work or school on your screen. Get outside, pick up a new hobby, or take a nap. Your eyes and brain will thank you.

1: One hour of exercise.

Exercise doesn’t mean you have to go for an intense run or get an expensive gym membership. Go for a light walk, add some yoga to your morning and night routines, or do some squats throughout the day. This addition will help your body feel more awake and mobile!

0:  Zero sugary drinks!

Your body is made up of about 60% water. In order to function properly, you need to make sure that you are giving it the proper hydration it needs. Although sodas, juices, coffee, and energy drinks do have some water in their composition, you are not getting nearly enough if this is your primary source of liquids. Add a glass of water to every meal, ask for water and a soda at a restaurant, or set a timer on your phone to remind you.

Adding these four little habits to your life will help your physical and mental health. If you would like to learn more specifics about the 5210 program, click HERE to visit their website.
