Frequently Asked Questions

504 refers to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This law prohibits any programs or activities that receive federal grants from discriminating against people with disabilities. Organizations are required to provide reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities in order to be compliant with the law.

ADA, or the Americans with Disabilities Act, prohibits disability-based discrimination in private employment, public accommodations, transportation, and state/local government services. It requires reasonable accommodations to be provided by employers, ensures public spaces are accessible, and prohibits discrimination in accessing government services.

Section 504 has a specific focus on protecting faculty and students with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act is a broader federal law that applies to non-federally funded activities and programs, meaning that it additionally covers non-faculty/students with disabilities.
