Green Water Sucker

2 flasks connected at different heights with one of the flasks being on top of a bunsen burner
PIRA: 4E10.00

Materials: 2 1000 mL Flasks, 1 rubber stoper with tube, 1 rod, 1 stand, tape (if necessary), green dye, water, bunsen burner, propane, 2 flask clamps

This demo is to show how low pressure in one flask will suck all the water out of the other flask seemingly to defy gravity. This is done by filling one flask to about 200 mL of water and the other to about 950 mL of green dye water. Hang the 200 mL flask above the bunsen burner and the 950 mL flask at an angle touching the table. Place the rubber stopper on the 200 mL flask and put the tube end in the other flask at a place it will suck up all the water (use tape if needed to get placement right). Start the fire on the bunsen burner and boil the water. This will make the air expand in the flask and escape through the 950mL flask. Once all the air is gone and it is only vapor there will be popping sounds which is the vapor turning back into water. Once this is happening you can turn off the fire and this will cool the flask pulling the water up through the tube due to low pressure and once the water has started to enter the top flask the water will empty much quicker because it is cooling the flask much faster.
