PIRA 1D50.41

Materials: Glass Pane Platform, Wine Glass (Glass or Plastic)

A plexiglass platform with cords attached to each corner and a wineglass, shown in the picture at left, are the required equipment for this demonstration. Hold the cords at the knot such that the platform hangs horizontally below your hand. The wineglass should be placed in the center of the platform. Water in the glass can enhance the experiment visually. The wineglass is then swung in a vertical circle, as in the picture at right. Starting and stopping are the most difficult parts of this experiment, and should be practiced before doing the demonstration in front of students. A pop bottle partly filled with water can be used to practice with.
