Flame Tornado

Paper sitting inside of a little cage.

A fire tornado in a cylindrical cage

PIRA 2C50.35

The equipment needed for this demonstration are the large wire mesh cylinder, the rotating platform, an aluminum tart pan, alcohol, paper towels, and long matches. tape the tart pan in the center of the rotating platform and the mesh cylinder to the platform centered on the pan. Saturate the paper towels with alcohol and drop them in the pan. If you miss, a long grasping tool is available to move the paper towels. Alternatively, put the paper towels in first, then use the syringe with the long tube attached to it to add the alcohol. The long matches are required to light the alcohol as the long lighters don't fit through the wire mesh. Spin the rotating platform and a 'tornado' of flames with form in the vortex created by the wire mesh. This demonstration works best if the air in the room is still. It also looks best with the lights turned off. Have a fire extinguisher handy to put out the burning alcohol when done with the demonstration.
