Data Science Alliance

The Data Science Alliance (DSA) is a group of faculty and researchers at Idaho State University across a variety of departments, colleges, and disciplines that teach, research, apply, and/or are interested in data science. The DSA exists to promote collaboration and support for these efforts; raise awareness of data science activity, research, and courses at Idaho State University; and provide an external face to facilitate collaboration and conversation with industry and government.

What is Data Science?

Data science is the study of data. It involves developing methods of recording, storing, and analyzing data to effectively extract useful information.

Data science allows entities to use the data at their disposal, whether that’s customer data, financial data or otherwise, in an intelligent manner. The results should be a key driver of growth.

Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can access data and use it to learn for themselves.

The process of learning begins with observations or data, such as examples, direct experience, or instruction, in order to look for patterns in data and make better decisions in the future based on the examples that we provide. The primary aim is to allow the computers to learn automatically without human intervention or assistance and adjust actions accordingly.

Artificial Intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages.
