General Advising

When to meet with your general advisor:

You’re a current or prospective student looking to learn more about major, minor, or certificate options.

You need help with class registration or you want to double check your schedule.

You need help with general education, petitions, or degree requirements.

You would like to build a degree plan.

You need academic support or help connecting with university resources.

Faculty Advising

How to find and connect with your department faculty advisor:

Your faculty advisor is listed in your Degree Works along with their email

You can also contact the department directly or visit the department website to find advising information for that department

When to meet with your faculty advisor:
Your faculty advisor can help you with questions specific to major requirements, curriculum, internship opportunities, graduate school, career exploration.

An academic advisor is someone who helps you plan your education and stay on track to reach your goals at Idaho State University. They can answer questions about your major, degree requirements, course selection, university policies, and campus resources.

You should meet with your advisor at least once every semester. Regular meetings can help you:

Create and update your academic plan.
Choose the right classes for your degree.
Stay on track for graduation.
Learn about scholarships, internships, and research opportunities.
Receive important updates about your program or department.
Get help declaring or changing your major.
Navigate academic policies, procedures, and petitions.

Whether you're just starting at ISU or preparing to graduate, your advisor is a valuable resource for making informed decisions about your academic journey.

Your academic advisor is assigned based on your major and academic needs. You can find your current advisor in a few different ways:

Log in to MyISU and view your profile information under Academic Tools and Registration Tools.
Check Degree Works to see your assigned advisor and their contact information.
Visit your department's website or contact the department office for advising information and office hours.
If you're still deciding on a major, contact the Office of Academic Advising for guidance.

If the major or advisor listed in MyISU is incorrect, contact the department for the program you intend to pursue.

Your general advisor can help you register for classes, understand degree and graduation requirements, and create an academic plan that fits your goals. They can also help you explore majors and minors, review transfer credits, and explain university policies and deadlines.

If you're facing challenges inside or outside the classroom, your advisor can connect you with campus resources and support services to help you succeed.

If you'd like to change your major, start by meeting with an academic advisor to discuss your options and any program-specific requirements. Once you've decided on a new major, you and your advisor will complete the Change Major Request process.
