Chocolate milk is often coined “the best recovery drink”. Why? Well, hopefully by the end of this blog post, you will understand why athletes choose chocolate milk after a sweaty workout.

Chocolate milk contains all of the macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The ratio of carbohydrates and proteins is 3:1. This ratio has been proven to efficiently refuel and repair exhausted muscles.

The carbohydrates or sugars, both from the chocolate and the milk, are digested into glucose molecules. Glucose is used for energy, speed, power, and agility during sports. The muscles store glucose in the muscles in the form of glycogen. Eating carbohydrate-containing food 15-30 minutes post-workout, will replenish glycogen stores and speed the recovery process.

Milk is a Great Source of Protein

There are 8 grams of protein in 1 cup of milk. Protein is digested into amino acids. Two key amino acids used for muscle repair are found in milk:  isoleucine and leucine.

Chocolate Milk is Also Hydrating!

It contains all of the electrolytes lost in sweat, namely, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Rehydrating after a workout helps with muscle recovery, fatigue, and energy balance.

Ultimately, athletes choose chocolate milk because it tastes good!  So along with the great taste, the nourishing and hydrating benefits give chocolate milk the title of “the best recovery drink”.
