Prenatal care options with Family Medicine Residency and University Health Center partnership

POCATELLO- November 17, 2021

The Idaho State University Health Center and Family Medicine Residency program have partnered to offer prenatal care and obstetrical services to ISU students, faculty and staff who are pregnant.

For many years, the ISU Family Medicine Residency Clinic, located on campus at 465 Memorial Drive, has provided prenatal and complete health care services, with 24 physicians, giving the ISU community lots of options.

Now, the new service, never before offered at the University Health Center, means ISU students, faculty and staff who are pregnant can also receive prenatal care at the Health Center, from Family Medicine Residency faculty and residents, with delivery at Portneuf Medical Center.

“We feel this will offer a convenient one-stop service for our pregnant patients who already get their regular care at the Health Center. Our convenient location wil make it easier for those with busy schedules,” says Dr. Jon Malan, medical director for the Health Center. “Those with existing health conditions will benefit from coordination of care and collaboration between the residents and their obstetrical faculty and their primary care providers here.”

For those who are pregnant, research shows that consulting a health care provider as soon as possible can help prevent pregnancy complications and premature delivery. The American Pregnancy Association recommends making an appointment for the first prenatal visit within eight weeks of your last menstrual period, even if you’ve been pregnant before.

Prenatal care clinics will be held on Thursday mornings, and could be expanded if there is sufficient demand. The services will be billed to most health insurances. If a patient does not have insurance, then a sliding fee will be implemented.

“We are always looking for better ways to serve our campus and are excited to add this new program," adds Malan.
