Open Access Textbooks

What is Open Access?

As the name suggests, these textbooks are available for your use without fees. They are typically written by subject matter experts, and published on a platform sponsored by a university, although there are organizations that have been built on these foundations, such as OpenStax.

For interpreters, these texts are especially helpful, as they often have illustrations that can be used, and the texts are accessible completely online. Depending on the license, you may also use resources from some texts to create texts of your own. For more information, see Creative Commons licensing.

Anatomy and Physiology is a dynamic textbook for the two-semester human anatomy and physiology course for life science and allied health majors. The book is organized by body system and covers standard scope and sequence requirements. Its lucid text, strategically constructed art, career features, and links to external learning tools address the critical teaching and learning challenges in the course. The web-based version of Anatomy and Physiology also features links to surgical videos, histology, and interactive diagrams.

A lab manual, student resources that include quizzes on anatomic illustrations, and guided lecture notes are also available.

Biodigital

Hailed as the equivalent of Google Maps for the human body, the BioDigital Human is a scientifically accurate cloud based virtual body. It includes information on the anatomical appearance of structures, procedures, and conditions. You can manipulate the view and position of the structure you are studying. An individual account is free.

Interpreters seeking to understand the basic procedures nurses undertake when evaluating patients and documenting conditions will appreciate this book, that includes information on assessment by body system.

From a review of the text:

In addition to the major area of physical assessment, students can access instructional videos, short pathophysiology on the body system, charting exercises, as well as indications of when to contact the health care provider with abnormal findings.
