Practical Nursing Admission Criteria
Program Prerequisites
Program Prerequisites may be taken during the first semester of study; see an example Degree Map. Many prerequisite courses may be taken as dual credit in high school.
Please note actual plans for individual students will vary based on advisor recommendations and academic needs.
The following criteria must be complete or nearly complete prior to application for admission into the Practical Nursing program:
1. All students must first be admitted to the university. For information on university admissions, contact the College of Technology Student Services office at (208) 282-2622.
2. Completion of the following prerequisite courses or equivalent with a grade of “C” or higher; HO 1111 OR BIOL 2227/2227L and BIOL 2228/2228L OR BIOL 3301/3301L and BIOL 3302/3302L; LLIB 1115: ENGL 1101
3. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0
4. Current Certified Nursing Assistant card OR JST verification of medic/corpsman
5. On-line Dosage Calculation Math Course from Workforce Training
6. Current CPR certification (Healthcare Provider) from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
Admission Process
Admission to the LPN Program is determined during Spring semester for the cohort beginning Fall semester the same year.
Students must have submitted a complete application by February 1st to be considered for admission.

Candidates will take a nationally normed admission test that determines the students overall academic readiness to perform effectively in a nursing program. This test includes reading, math, writing and science. These scores are combined with cumulative GPA earned (includes all post-secondary coursework), years of work experience as a CNA as documented from previous or current employer to rank-order applicants for each admission class.
TEAS Testing
The ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is designed specifically to assess a student's preparedness entering the health science fields. Studies show a consistent link between a student’s performance on the TEAS and future academic success.
To be considered for admission, TEAS test scores must meet the following requirements:
- TEAS scores must be from an examination completed within twelve (12) months of the application deadline.
- Applicants are permitted a maximum of two (2) TEAS attempts within the eligibility period.
- A minimum of thirty (30) days must elapse between TEAS testing attempts.
- The TEAS examination must be completed by the February 1 application deadline.
Applicants are responsible for purchasing and scheduling TEAS Testing. COT Student Services will provide testing for applicants with no additional proctor fees. The TEAS test must be completed by the February 1st deadline. To schedule testing with Student Services please call (208) 282-2622 for availability.

Already taken the TEAS? If an applicant has completed the TEAS previously within 12 months of the application deadline they can request an official transcript be sent to Tashina Hunsaker at Idaho State University PN Program.
