Community Honors Attorney Bryce Lloyd with Scholarship Fund

Friends of Bryce Lloyd present Arts and Letters development director Matt Stucki with a check to fund student scholarships.

Throughout his life, Blackfoot attorney Bryce Lloyd dedicated himself to improving the lives of young people in his community.

Lloyd volunteered at the American Legion Hall, provided development assistance to small businesses and served on the school board, but he had a true passion for educating Southeast Idaho students. He contributed many hours, and financial support, to the We the People program at Blackfoot High School, which promotes civic responsibility and constitutional knowledge in elementary and secondary classrooms.

“He left a legacy of pursuing education, a desire for citizens to be politically informed, and a desire to make a difference in his community,” said Holly Kartchner, Lloyd’s longtime friend. “He wanted students to have an understanding of the rule of law.”

Since his passing in Dec. 2017, Lloyd’s community has rallied to honor that legacy. Led by members of the Blackfoot We the People board that Lloyd helped create, Blackfoot residents raised enough funds to create a scholarship endowment in his name.

The Bryce Lloyd Memorial Scholarship is a $2,000 award for Blackfoot High School graduates continuing their education at Idaho State University. Interested students can apply through March 31.

“Bryce really believed in the ability of Southeast Idaho kids to be on a national stage, to be recognized academically at a top-tier level, to be acknowledged for their intellectual and scholarly abilities."

Lloyd, a proud Bengal and graduate of Idaho State’s political science program, often encouraged Blackfoot students to attend the university 20 miles down the road. The scholarship, his friends hope, will enable many more students to pursue degrees at his alma mater.

“We as a board just couldn’t have been more tickled to present a valuable scholarship in his name,” said Dennis Hatch, We the People board president. “He was dedicated to anyone he worked with. He went above and beyond.”

To raise the money necessary to fund the scholarship, Lloyd’s friends hosted a benefit dinner in Blackfoot on Sept. 19, 2019. The funds raised at the event, Kartchner said, far surpassed organizers’ expectations and ensured the scholarship could support students for many years.

For his friends, the event was an opportunity to properly honor Lloyd’s lifelong commitment to education.

“Bryce really believed in the ability of Southeast Idaho kids to be on a national stage, to be recognized academically at a top-tier level, to be acknowledged for their intellectual and scholarly abilities,” Kartchner said. “He willingly donated his time and resources to help others.”
