Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost

Karen Appleby was named Idaho State University's Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost December 4, 2020.

Dr. Appleby's Leadership Philosophy

As the Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost, she is the Chief Academic Officer of the University.

The Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost has oversight of units that directly impact instructional, academic and research programs. This includes the following administrative units:

  1. outreach campuses/centers
  2. research
  3. libraries
  4. divisions, institutes, centers, and colleges

In addition, the Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost develops and assures compliance with administrative directives that support the mission of the University.  

Appleby is responsible for ISU’s regional accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Appleby first came to Idaho State in 2004 as an assistant professor in the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education. During her time as a Bengal, she served as interim dean of the College of Education for two years.

Appleby's most recent role was as the director of the Program for Instructional Effectiveness. In that role she has created new and innovative approaches to faculty development and provided support to Academic Affairs in the area of faculty affairs.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Hanover College and her master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
