Honorlock Proctoring: Passwords and Bypass PINs

February 2, 2026

Honorlock provides a reliable solution for proctoring online exams at Idaho State University, giving you the flexibility and security you need. For the system to work effectively, certain built-in features—particularly system-generated passwords and bypass PINs—need to remain unchanged and be used according to their intended purpose.

This article walks you through how these tools function within Canvas and shares best practices that will help you maintain exam integrity while supporting your students' success.

Honorlock Passwords

When Honorlock is enabled for a quiz or exam, the system automatically generates and applies a password, including for practice quizzes. This password should remain unchanged, as modifying it prevents Honorlock from launching correctly and can block student access to the assessment.

Important: The Honorlock-generated password is intended for system use only. If it is shared with students, it can be reused to bypass Honorlock proctoring.

How Students Access Password-Protected Exams

Students access Honorlock-proctored quizzes through the Honorlock page in the course. When the quiz is launched from that page, Honorlock automatically enters the password on the student’s behalf.

Troubleshooting Password Entry Issues

If the password doesn't auto-populate for a student, the browser extension is likely not detecting or launching the exam. Common causes include:

  • The student is not using Google Chrome or hasn't installed the Honorlock extension.
  • The student’s Chrome browser or operating system needs updating.
  • The student is using an unsupported device (Honorlock requires a computer—tablets and mobile devices are not supported.)
  • The student is accessing the quiz from the Quiz page or through a module link instead of through the Honorlock page.

Student Support

Students experiencing technical difficulties should contact Honorlock's chat support directly. They can access support by clicking the blue speech-bubble icon at the bottom of the Honorlock page.

Recommendation: Encourage students to complete the HonorPrep Guided Tour before taking their practice quiz. This guided tour verifies system compatibility and walks students through the setup process to ensure a successful proctoring experience.

Honorlock Bypass PIN

In extenuating circumstances, students may need to take an Honorlock-proctored exam with in-person proctoring, such as at an ISU Testing Center or through Disability Services. For these situations, Honorlock can provide a bypass PIN.

Critical Information:

  • The bypass PIN completely disables Honorlock for that specific exam attempt. Do not share this PIN with any students.
  • Bypassed exam attempts are not recorded in the Honorlock system.
  • Bypass PINs should only be used in coordination with Honorlock Support and ISU Services (ISU Testing Centers and Disability Services) to ensure proper accommodations while maintaining exam integrity.
