Political Science Professor Selected for Kazakhstan Fellowship

January 23, 2023

Dr. Colin Johnson, Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department, was selected for a fellowship in the Kazakhstan Futures Program for Spring 2023, which is funded by the US Embassy in Kazakhstan and organized by the Oxus Society for Central Asian Affairs in Washington, D.C. and the PaperLab Research Center in Astana, Kazakhstan.

He will join a team of Kazakh and American researchers to participate in a 6-month project that will address emerging sociopolitical challenges in Kazakhstan through collaborative policy-oriented research.

Johnson was selected to participate in the research team that will focus on migration-related issues for Kazakh society, as it is a destination and a transit state for significant international labor migration flows among post-Soviet republics. He will travel to the capital, Astana, in late January for a three-day organizational meeting of the research teams, as well as meet with Kazakh think tanks and government entities. After this initial meeting, the research teams will then collaborate for six months from their respective institutions on their research briefs
