Dr. Shin Kue Ryu, ISU Political Science faculty member, was selected to attend the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations Educators Workshop in New York City, where he joined top experts and educators to explore global issues and enhance international relations teaching.
Dr. Shin Kue Ryu, a faculty member in the Department of Political Science at Idaho State University (ISU), was recently invited to participate in the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) College and University Educators Workshop, held April 10–11, 2025, in New York City. This highly selective event welcomed only 98 faculty members from across the United States to engage with leading experts on U.S. foreign and international policy.
Founded in 1921, the CFR is a nonpartisan, independent organization that combines the functions of a think tank, publisher, and educator. The workshop offered a valuable opportunity for educators to deepen their understanding of global affairs and explore effective ways to teach international relations and U.S. foreign policy. Discussions focused on preparing students for globally connected careers and included expert briefings and collaborative sessions on pressing international issues, on topics such as U.S. leadership, global conflict, migration, and emerging technologies.
According to Dr. Ryu, the U.S. still leads the world in its academic and research institutions. “Students, both domestically and internationally, are attracted to the U.S. academic institutions,” he said. “Thus, the invited members recognize that it is their responsibility to effectively teach the latest developments and be part of the discussion for the benefit of their students.” The CFR workshop, he added, offered a platform to do exactly that.
Beyond the formal presentations, the workshop fostered dynamic dialogue between educators and CFR experts, encouraging thoughtful exchanges and collaboration among faculty from a range of institutions and disciplines.
Dr. Ryu’s participation reflects a shared commitment among educators nationwide to stay informed on evolving global dynamics and to equip students with the knowledge and tools needed to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
