College of Arts & Letters

Welcome to the Department of Political Science

News & Events

Within the College of Arts & Letters the Department of Political Science has one of the largest undergraduate programs and one of the largest graduate programs, being one of only three departments having a doctoral program. The Political Science Department offers a minor, and majors leading to the Associate of Sciences, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Sciences degrees as well as the Master of Arts, the Master of Public Administration, and Doctor of Arts degrees to over 170 students and enrolls between 900 to 1,000 students in its classes each semester. Our student organizations include the Pi Sigma Alpha Honors Society, the Pi Alpha Alpha honors society, the Law Club, and the ACLU Club. Our department and our programs are actively involved with the International Studies Program, the Women Studies Program, and several Secondary Education programs throughout Southeast Idaho.

Political Science majors at ISU benefit from a faculty dedicated to teaching excellence, research and scholarship, and public service. A diversity of courses in all the major subfields of political science is offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The faculty is student friendly and very accessible, and our classes are small enough to allow for serious discussions and intellectual interaction. Student advising is an important part of the student-faculty relationship and internship opportunities are available.

Our department is located on the top floor of the north wing of Graveley Hall. Our Department Chair is Dr. Donna Lybecker. Our Department Administrative Assistant is Ms. Caroline Baergen. Our office phone is (208) 282-2211 and our fax number is (208) 282-4833. Our mailing address is Department of Political Science, Idaho State University, Campus Box 8073, Pocatello, ID 83209. Please contact us if you have any questions about the political science department.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Donna Lybecker, Associate Professor of Political Science, who has been named as Distinguished Teacher at ISU for the 2012-2013 academic year. This award is the highest teaching award bestowed upon faculty at ISU. Dr. Lybecker was nominated for the award through a grassroots effort of her students and was also named a Master teacher at ISU in 2011. Please learn more about Dr. Lybecker and all her achievements.
