Letter from VP of Student Affairs
August 25, 2020
Hello Bengals.
How were your first days of class? I know it’s hard to believe because it seems like everything has just begun, but the next few months are going to fly past, so let’s talk about how to set yourself up for success this semester by embracing the Bengal ROAR!
RESPECT
Every day you make decisions that affect your education and your life. Be thoughtful and wise in these important choices. A special part of being a member of this community this year includes wearing a face covering to protect yourself and those with whom you share this community from the spread of Covid-19. In addition, we expect every ISU student and community member to commit to the Bengal Pledge. Also abide by the Student Code of Conduct, which helps everyone enjoy their learning experience. Finally, you are also here to become a scholar, but your education is what you make it. Faculty, staff, and other students will ask you to work hard and to challenge yourself. Your university community will ask you to be both an outstanding citizen and an outstanding scholar. Expect the best from yourself and from Idaho State University!
OPPORTUNITY
You will find Idaho State University to have a diversity of experiences, ideas, opportunities, and people. Step out of your comfort zone, try new things, experience new ideas, learn about cultures and people different from yourself.
ACHIEVEMENT OF GREATNESS
Don’t ask for permission to be great. Ignore what you or others may have thought was impossible and go for it! ISU offers hundreds of opportunities and resources to support you in and out of the classroom. Grab that support and go for greatness!
ROAR!
You will enjoy yourself more and be a more successful student if you spend your time and your energy on activities that matter. Choose your friends wisely - choose people whose behaviors and attitudes help you excel. Study hard. Take advantage of all that ISU has to offer. We are better together. We are better as Bengals!
And now a special note for our first-year Bengals:
For the past few years, you’ve tolerated your parents’ slower pace. You walked on ahead, texting and tweeting as they ambled along. You answered their endless questions, rolled your eyes when they asked you about school, about relationships, or about that best friend you had in sixth grade. And you put up with their curfews – perhaps pushing the boundaries when you could.
Today, we salute you as you celebrate your new home and your hard-earned independence! However, as you celebrate, take a moment to remember that you and your parents once walked hand-in-hand. You asked endless questions of your own, and you basked in their attention.
So while you’re settling in and starting your new life as a Bengal, remember who helped you get here, and say thank you. They will miss you more than you know.
Roar, Bengals, Roar!
