Personal background and Interests

I was born and raised in sunny San Diego. I grew up working on, riding, and racing dirt bikes and ATV’s. I still keep riding as a hobby and I am passing that passion on to my kids. Football and hockey are two of my favorite sports. My family and I moved up here in 2018. Living in Idaho offers a better quality of life for myself and my family. I love spending time outside with my wife, 3 kids, 2 dogs, chickens, and cat. We all enjoy camping, fishing (not catching), riding four wheelers, sitting by a camp fire and hiking.

I have worked as a Respiratory Therapist in Sioux City, IA, San Diego, CA and currently work in Idaho Falls, ID. I have had a wide range of experience between the three states, which gives me the ability to pass on my experience to the students. I get a lot of satisfaction from being a health care provider and educator. I love have the opportunity to help others become RT’s. I am extremely meticulous and thorough in my work and I look forward to teaching individuals to become competent and confident Respiratory Therapists here at Idaho State University.

Background

I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. I am an avid fan of my hometown Jacksonville Jaguars, since 1995, and am truly DTWD. I married the love of my life (Alicia) in 2014 and we’ve since built a wonderful family. We have two children, Ava and Bennett.

I grew up only a short drive from the beach my entire childhood and young adult life but relocated to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia (i.e., Lynchburg, Virginia) with my family in 2018. I love spending time with my family still exploring our ‘new’ surroundings, going on walks, and hitting the hiking trails. I also help coach my son’s tee-ball team and I’m even a ‘cheer dad’.

I’ve worked as a bedside Respiratory Therapist (RT) since graduating with my associate’s degree in 2014. I jumped immediately at an opportunity, right out of school, to work at both the Level 1 Trauma Center in my hometown and the closest level IV NICU within 150 mile-radius. I gained a wealth of experience in those 4 years after graduation prior to moving to Lynchburg in 2018. I then obtained my Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (RRT-NPS) and worked bedside, ‘on the road’, and ‘in the sky’ as a RT specialized in Neonatal/Pediatric Critical Care Transport until 2023, where I then shifted a lot of focus to quality improvement (QI) and other similar initiatives to work at ‘fine tuning’ by research skills. I then decided to pursue higher education, with the goal and ambition to teach and make a difference in my profession. I obtained my Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Respiratory Therapy from Boise State University in the Fall of 2023 followed by obtaining my Master of Science in Respiratory Care (MSRC) from the same university in the Summer of 2025. My goals are to strive to be the best leader, best teacher, and best person I can be.

Hi, I’m Isaac Sharrett, the Program Director for the Respiratory Therapy program at Mountain Empire Community College and an adjunct instructor at Idaho State University. I’ve been a respiratory therapist for nearly a decade and have a passion for both patient care and education.

My journey into respiratory therapy started in 2011 when I worked as a medical device representative for bariatric patients. During that time, I was often around respiratory therapists and saw firsthand the impact they had on patient care. That experience sparked my interest in the field, and in 2014, I graduated from Mountain Empire Community College with my degree in Respiratory Therapy and earned my Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential. I later went on to complete my Bachelor of Business Administration at King University in 2016.

I started my career at Bristol Regional Medical Center, where I gained experience in critical care, pulmonary function testing (PFT), the bronchoscopy lab, and the Black Lung Clinic. In 2020, I became the Director of the Respiratory Care Department, leading my team through some of the most challenging times in healthcare. While I loved working in the hospital setting, I found that I had a strong passion for education. I started teaching as an adjunct instructor at Mountain Empire Community College in 2021, transitioned to full-time as the Director of Clinical Education in 2022, and became the Program Director in 2024. I also teach ACLS and BLS courses and began teaching at Idaho State University in 2024.

My approach to teaching is to make learning as engaging and stress-free as possible. I believe that students learn best when they feel supported and can connect the material to real-life situations. I strive to create an environment where students are not only challenged but also encouraged to think critically and develop confidence in their abilities. My goal is to help students succeed by making complex concepts relatable, using real-world examples, and fostering a positive learning experience.

Outside of teaching, my life revolves around my family. My wife, Katie, is a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, and we have three young boys who keep us on our toes. When I’m not in the classroom or working on program development, you can find me spending time with my family.
