New Canvas Feature: Discussion Checkpoints

January 26, 2026

One of the most requested discussion features is finally in Canvas!

The Graded Checkpoints feature enables the assignment of separate due dates and points possible for discussions in ISU Canvas. The graded checkpoints feature allows you to set a “Reply to Topic” due date and a separate “Required Replies” due date. In addition, you can establish the points possible for replying to the topic, the number of additional replies required (between 1 and 10) and the points possible for additional replies. This streamlines the grading process in Discussion SpeedGrader.

To enable graded checkpoints, edit the settings for the discussion and check the box for Assign graded checkpoints. Once the box is checked, the Checkpoint Settings will become available for establishing the points possible for an initial reply to the topic post, the number of additional replies required, and the points possible for additional replies. Under Assignment Settings, a Reply to Topic Due Date and Time and a Required Replies Due Date and Time will be displayed. Note: This feature cannot be enabled for discussions that have already received posts.

For more information, see the article, Discussion Checkpoints in ISU Canvas for Faculty. The ITRC is always here to help you navigate these tools in ISU Canvas. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need assistance.
