Idaho State University Launches the New Illumina MiSeq i100 Sequencer

May 7, 2026

Idaho State University is thrilled to announce the arrival of the Illumina MiSeq i100 Plus DNA sequencer, bringing unprecedented speed and simplicity to ISU’s Molecular Research Core Facility (MRCF). This new benchtop sequencing platform represents a major leap forward for genomics, allowing researchers to accelerate their discoveries and perform deeper sequencing faster than ever before.

To celebrate the arrival of the MiSeq  i100 Plus, the MRCF hosted a launch party where experts from Illumina presented the new system’s capabilities, discuss project design with faculty, and answer questions.

The MRCF has provided researchers with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) data since 2013 when the original MiSeq sequencer was purchased. The updated MiSeq i100 Plus replaces the previous model, introducing new and improved NGS capabilities. It delivers same day results four times faster than previous systems, with total run times ranging from just four to 24 hours. With an expanded output range of 1.5 to 30 gigabases and the ability to generate up to 100 million reads per run, the instrument is designed to handle a wide variety of applications with ease.

The system also features integrated data analysis, allowing researchers to generate summaries in two hours or less using preconfigured pipelines. Additionally, the instrument boasts sustainability innovations, including room temperature reagent storage, an 85 percent reduction in packaging waste, and a 35 percent smaller carbon footprint. Ultimately, by combining these advanced analytics and rapid processing speeds, the new platform seamlessly streamlines every capability of the previous MiSeq.
