College of Education is Reinstating its Master of Education in Literacy Graduate Program

April 9, 2026

The College of Education is reinstating its Master of Education in Literacy program, beginning in the fall semester. For students seeking to become literacy leaders, the program offers a fully online (synchronous or asynchronous) experience, engaging hands-on field research.

Amanda Eller, Ph.D., department chair and clinical professor, played a key role in reintroducing the program. “The Department of Teaching and Educational Studies' Literacy Team is excited to offer an online program that can meet the needs of today's practicing educators throughout Idaho and beyond, including our important rural areas,” she said.

The program provides students with evidence-based expertise in the science of literacy, including reading, writing and digital literacies. This program will prepare them to become literacy leaders and advocates in their schools and districts. For Idaho elementary teachers, the program also offers a K-3 Literacy Endorsement, a valuable credential focusing on early literacy instruction.

To apply, students must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the United States (or an equivalent from an institution in another country) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher in upper-division coursework. They must also hold a current K-12 teaching certificate or credential, and submit a letter of intent. This fully online program is available to teachers within and outside of Idaho. Students enrolled in the program are required to complete a minimum of 30 semester credit hours.

“Teaching students to read and write provides them the foundation essential for further academic achievement, career readiness, and full participation in modern society,” said Eller. “Programs such as ISU's Master of Education in Literacy help teachers deepen their knowledge and skills in this critically important area.”

Applications are now open for the fall semester. Applicants can apply on the Graduate School’s Admission page.
