Pocatello Music Teacher Heather Petrella Awarded the Fall 2024 ISU Outstanding Cooperating Teacher Award

February 3, 2025

The Idaho State University (ISU) College of Education is pleased to acknowledge an outstanding cooperating teacher at the end of each semester. Heather Petrella from Hawthorne Middle School in Pocatello was chosen as the recipient of the Fall 2024 ISU Cooperating Teacher Award.

Petrella was nominated by music student teaching candidate, Natalie West, who graduated from the College of Education in December of 2024. Described as an exceptional individual, Petrella has been praised for her empathy and care regarding students, and her dedication to giving them the best education possible. Petrella’s teaching style stems from wanting to help her students succeed in various aspects of their lives. Whether it’s through time-management skills, emotional intelligence, or even courage, Petrella inspires her students to tackle life head-on, and do so with a sense of pride and purpose.

Petrella graduated from ISU in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She went on to earn a master’s degree in instructional design and technology from the College of Education in 2019. She has taught in both Idaho and Wyoming.

“Fellow student teachers who have had the privilege of observing your classroom speak of you and your students with the highest praise,” said West in her nomination letter. “A testament to the incredible impact you have on everyone who steps into your orbit.”

Heida Kessler, Petrella’s previous English teacher and current principal at Hawthorne Middle School also emphasized the impact Petrella had on those around her by saying, “It is my privilege and honor to work together with one of my former students, and one of the highlights of my career as an administrator.”

As an educator, Petrella always aims to educate and help her students become the best they can be. She is a lifelong learner, leader, and mentor to many. About her profound impact and influence on both her students and herself, West said, “Your work is a testament to the transformative power of education and the vital role teachers play in shaping not only academic outcomes but the hearts and minds of future generations.”

Petrella has been a leader in the education system and has also been instrumental in helping students find their place within the classroom, both at Hawthorne Middle School and ISU.

“Heather regularly shares her activities, resources, and new fun things with ISU music education students, and presents at music education conferences,” said Dr. Thomas Kloss, professor in the Department of Music at ISU. “We are thrilled to support Heather's Outstanding Cooperating Teacher nomination and award.”

When asked about what being a cooperating teacher means to her, Petrella emphasized the importance of collaboration and responsibility.

“When teacher candidates enter my classroom, I see it as an opportunity to learn from them just as much as they learn from me. I am fortunate to have had amazing instructors who supported me when I started my career. I aim to be that same kind of support for aspiring educators.”
