Idaho State University’s Department of Teaching and Educational Studies recently awarded the Spring Outstanding Cooperating Teacher award to Natalie Moerer at a surprise assembly at Hansen Elementary School.
The Department of Teaching and Educational Studies maintains strong and meaningful partnerships with school districts across Idaho. These collaborations are essential to the preparation of preservice teachers, who benefit immensely from the opportunity to complete their student teaching experiences under the guidance of exceptional educators. Each semester, teacher candidates are invited to nominate one cooperating teacher who they feel went above and beyond in supporting their professional growth.
Representatives from the College of Education — including Interim Dean Esther Ntuli, Amanda Eller, chair of the Department of Teaching and Educational Studies and a clinical professor located at ISU-Twin Falls; Kaywin Cottle, clinical instructor; and Mona Heern, director of clinical experiences — attended the assembly at Hansen Elementary School to present the award. Held in collaboration with the local school community, the event brought together students, faculty, district administrators including Superintendent Angie Lakey-Campbell and Principal Heidi Skinner, to celebrate Ms. Moerer's exceptional teaching and mentorship, as well as her significant contributions to the preparation of future educators.
"Working with a student teacher this past semester gave me the chance to reflect on and refine many of my own practices. Supporting Mrs. Pickett allowed me to step back, observe, and more closely examine the factors contributing to student success or struggle. Teaching is truly a team effort, and it was a privilege to help guide and encourage someone entering a profession that I deeply love," Moerer said. “I am honored to receive this award and to be recognized by Idaho State University. However, this recognition is not mine alone. Mrs. Pickett brought dedication and enthusiasm to the classroom, our students were flexible and open to new ideas, and our incredible staff and administration at Hansen Elementary provided unwavering support. I am sincerely grateful to be part of such a collaborative and inspiring educational community.”
In her nomination, ISU College of Education student Shanda Pickett wrote "Mrs. Moerer has been an outstanding mentor and cooperating teacher, showing patience, organization, and a deep care for her students. Her calm and understanding nature creates a classroom where every child feels valued and supported. She has not only helped me become a better teacher but also a better person, showing me the importance of being both thorough and thoughtful in my teaching."
