Idaho State University Recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for Student Access and Earning Potential

May 8, 2025

The Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education have named Idaho State University an accessible institution where students can expect to earn more than the median income in their field after graduation.

The University was classified as a professions-based undergraduate/graduate-doctorate institution, one of only 135 U.S. mid-sized universities to receive such a designation. Idaho State was also recognized as a higher student access-medium earnings university. This designation is reserved for institutions who offer broad access to students across many demographics, and with students earning between the average median income and up to 50 percent above average median income after graduation. Professions-based schools are schools where the majority of degrees awarded are professional, pre-professional or career-aligned.

"This classification demonstrates our commitment to students and acknowledges the unique opportunities that are available to them through an ISU education,” said Provost Adam Bradford. “Along with our R2 research designation from Carnegie, this news highlights our impact in offering professionally aligned programs in fields with strong demand, such as the health professions and engineering.”

In past years, the Carnegie Foundation classified schools solely based on the highest degree awarded, but this year expanded its classifications to consider the multi-dimensional aspects of colleges and universities.

"This ranking shows we are making significant opportunities available to students in impactful ways such as research, professional training and career readiness,” said ISU President Robert Wagner. “We are proud of ISU’s accessible admissions process, which allows more students to graduate with impressive earning opportunities."

In February, Idaho State was re-designated as a Carnegie-classified Research 2: High Spending and Doctorate Production institution.

Every three years, Carnegie evaluates and classifies more than 3,000 institutions nationwide.
