POCATELLO – Fourteen Idaho State University undergraduate students were awarded an Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)  fellowship for the summer that start on May 23.

The 2018 fellows are:

  • Nabin Bhattarai, from Lumbini, Nepal;
  • Tristin Herup-Wheeler, Jennie Nelson, and Lance Port, Pocatello;
  • Camdon Kay, Kuna;
  • Bryn Kennell, McCall;
  • Alexander Lopez, Weiser;
  • Olivia Love, Eagle;
  • Brittany Mangum, Hazelton;
  • McKenzie Mangun, Caldwell;
  • Maria Marez, Hagerman;
  • Alleyna Martez, Nampa;
  • Shawn Plyler, Silverdale, Washington; and
  • Kainoa Quia-Park, Chubbuck.

The primary goal of the Idaho INBRE Program is to provide biomedical research opportunities for Idaho undergraduate students. The program also helps promote health research careers.

ISU INBRE Program Director Mark Austin helps foster learning environments and student success. The undergraduate fellowship has a very competitive application process. A wide variety of applications are submitted, and only select students are awarded the fellowship.

“Applications are evaluated based on academic credentials, previous research experience, career plans in a biomedical discipline and letters of recommendation,” said Austin.

Students are supervised for 10 weeks while they work on independent projects. After 10 weeks, students are able to present their research findings at the statewide INBRE conference in Moscow from July 30 to Aug. 1. Students are given awards based on their category of research.

The INBRE Program is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences Institutional Development Award.
