The Idaho State University Adult Success Center is now accepting students for free, basic skill adult education classes beginning Aug. 22.  Classes are filling fast.

The Adult Success Center, located on the third floor of the Roy F. Christensen Building (#48) on the ISU campus, helps people 16 or older and not enrolled in school with reading, writing, math, and English as Second Language skills.  Assessment and preparation for the GED, high school equivalency certificate, and college admissions or placement tests are offered.  College students may also access the Center’s basic reading, writing and/or math instruction if they are not currently enrolled in the subject for which they are seeking assistance.

Through assessment, advising, placement, and instruction, the Adult Success Center staff assists students in furthering their education or employment goals.

Melissa Hornby, an aide with the Adult Success Center, explains, "A skills assessment helps us evaluate current learning levels and helps identify what you need to work on. Classes are offered during the day and in the evening. They run for eight-week sessions and help prepare you for a college classroom environment."

The learning environment at the Adult Success Center is inviting.  Students progress at their own speed and can choose from many individual learning options: classroom instruction, one-on-one tutoring, guided self-study, computer learning, and distance learning. All services of the Adult Success Center are free.

"In 2003 I realized that I needed to put my fears aside and set the right example for my daughters.  I earned my GED and began courses in education at the College of Southern Idaho.  After two years I transferred to Idaho State University where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English.  I am now the Resource Center Coordinator at the College of Technology, as well as the English Instructor for the START Program.  I believe in the power of education," states Raushanna Byington.

Adult Success Center hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am-5 pm, with evening hours from 6:30-9:30 pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Many of the same programs offered on the ISU campus are also available at Outreach Centers in American Falls, Blackfoot, Montpelier, Preston, and Soda Springs. Call 282-2468 and make an appointment today to improve your skills.
