Idaho State University enrolled a record headcount of 14,520 students during the fall semester 2008.

This total includes both part-time and full-time students. There were 12,794 academic students and 1,726 technology or professional technical education students enrolled.

Total headcount enrollment was up 346 students from last year’s enrollment of 14,174, a 2.44 percent increase.

“A good part of our enrollment increase is explained by the success of our Early College Program, which had 168 more students than one year ago,” said Larry Ford, Ph.D., associate vice president for special programs and enrollment management. “This program has grown substantially during the last four years.”

There were also 119 more technology/professional-technical education students than the previous fall.

Some individual academic departments also noted large increases. For example, enrollment in Idaho State’s nuclear engineering program is up 24 percent from last year and more than double from four years ago.

“We’re pleased to see this improvement in overall enrollment, but there are areas we can improve on,” Ford said. “One of those areas is retention of first- and second-year students, and another area is attracting better prepared students. We’re hoping students that have participated in the Early College Program will consider ISU for their college career.”

Idaho State is making efforts to increase its numbers of transfer and graduate students.

Final enrollment numbers for spring 2009 will not be available until after the term closes.
