Parents and guardians of children in kindergarten through second grade in School District 25 are invited to an informational meeting about the Idaho State University College of Education mixed-age classroom at 7 p.m. May 3 in Albion Hall Room 116.

“Children’s thinking and sense of community are at the heart of the curriculum,” said Sally Pena, a professor at the College of Education. “This child-centered classroom meets the same curricular goals as does every other class in the Pocatello School District.”

Pena said that much of the children’s learning is organized into centers and projects. The curriculum is programmed so that children are encouraged to be in charge of their own learning to the extent that they are able, while teachers and other adults work with individuals and small groups.

“This classroom is in quite high demand both by university families and the general Pocatello public,” Pena said.

For more information, contact Deanna Carlson at Edahow Elementary School at 233-1844 or Pena at 233-7818.###
