Emerging applications and approaches for dealing with complex and data-intensive biomedical analysis will be the focus of the third annual Idaho State University bioinformatics workshop Oct. 12-13 in Lava Hot Springs.

The “Symposium on Biomedical Bioinformatics” will convene at the Aura Soma Lava Conference Center. Researchers will be able to explore recent computational approaches for understanding complex diseases. The symposium also will provide a training session on the concepts and skills of genome analysis and genome science.

Friday’s events will include the “Beyond Default Settings” training session at 1 p.m., which will provide expertise in several commonly used bioinformatics data manipulations. This will be followed by a reception and banquet. Following the reception will be the keynote speaker Michael Rosenberg, Ph.D., from Arizona State University.

On Oct. 13, symposium presentations will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These presentations will include talks by regional researchers using bioinformatics approaches to solve data-intensive problems. Opportunities to participate in collaborative sessions will follow each talk.

In addition to the keynote speaker, other confirmed speakers are Celeste Brown, Ph.D., Bioinformatics Coordinator at the University of Idaho; Gong Xin Yu, Ph.D., Assistant Bioinformatics Professor at Boise State University; Balasubramanian Ganesan, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor at Utah State University; Chris Daniels, Ph.D., Director of Biomedical Research Institute at ISU and Heath Ogden, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at ISU.

Registration for the symposium is free and includes meals and receptions, but space is limited. For more information about the symposium, including lodging or to reserve a seat, contact Mike Thomas at mthomas@isu.edu or Heath Ogden at ogdet@isu.edu.
