'Historic Pocatello: People and Places' conference set April 28 at Idaho State University

POCATELLO – The Idaho State University Department of History and the Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission will present the “Historic Pocatello: People and Places” conference on April 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Pond Student Union Wood River Room.

The conference is a celebration of Idaho Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month and will feature seven guest speakers from Pocatello.

Guest speakers include Nick Nielson, Pocatello attorney and chair of the Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission; Jerry Myers, Pocatello architect; Ellen Ryan, head of special collections at ISU; Jacquee Alvord, Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission; Brenda Baumgartner-Stanley, author and journalist; Randy Dixon, chair of Relight the Night Committee; and Kristine Hunt, ISU history instructor.

April 28

9 a.m. – Welcome by Nick Nielson, Pocatello attorney and chair of the Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission

9:15 a.m. – Jerry Myers, Pocatello architect “The Whitman Story: AKA St. Marie’s Hotel, Hotel Nicolett, and the Hotel Whitman”

9:45 a.m. – Ellen Ryan, head of Special Collections at ISU “The Stedtfeld Family: Pocatello Business and Land Owners, 1904-1984”

10:15 a.m. – Break

10:30 a.m. – Jacquee Alvord, Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission “Andrew Caldwell: The Civil War Veteran Who Shaped Pocatello’s Future”

11 a.m. – Keynote speaker: Brenda Baumgartner-Stanley “Finding Idaho’s Gems through My Love of Storytelling”

11:45 a.m. – Lunch

1:15 p.m. – Nielson will present  “The Glory Days of the Union Pacific Railroad Station in Pocatello”

1:45 p.m. – Randy Dixon, chair of Relight the Night Committee “Relight the Night”

2:15 p.m. – Kristine Hunt, ISU history instructor “Pocatello’s Carnegie Library: Local and Global Context”

2:45 p.m. – Nielson will present  “Closing Comments”
