From Identified Need to Institutional Innovation.

The vision for The Center for Accessibility Leadership and Innovation began within the Idaho State University Disability Services Office. For years, Disability Services worked directly with students, faculty, and community members to remove barriers and expand access. Through that work, one truth became clear: accessibility must extend beyond accommodation, it must be embedded into leadership, systems, and community design.

The Department of Disability Services envisioned a centralized hub, a center intentionally created to align educators, employers, public agencies, and community members with accessible resources, research-based tools, and innovative solutions. A place not only for compliance, but for collaboration. Not only for support, but for advancement. Over time, Disability Services developed programs, frameworks, materials, and initiatives that expanded far beyond traditional service delivery. As these efforts grew, so did the need for a structured center that could steward, expand, and sustain them with clarity and long-term vision. That vision came to life through the creation of The Center for Accessibility, Leadership, and Innovation. As an initiative of the Department of Disability Services at Idaho State University, the center was established to elevate and expand this foundational work. The Department provided the research base, subject-matter expertise, infrastructure, and strategic support that made the center possible. Many of the programs and materials now stewarded through the center were originally developed within Disability Services and are now centralized for greater sustainability, growth, and community impact. Disability Services continues to play a critical role in the Center for Accessibility, Leadership, and Innovation enhancing, development, collaboration, and ongoing advancement. This partnership allows the center to serve as both an extension and an expansion of the department’s mission, reaching broader audiences, building new partnerships, and strengthening systems of access across sectors. Because of this support the center is uniquely positioned to serve those who teach, employ, lead, and support individuals with disabilities.

The vision that began within Disability Services has grown into a center designed to redefine accessibility, not as an afterthought, but as a shared responsibility and a leadership standard. With that vision, The Center for Accessibility Leadership and Innovation came to life in 2026.
