Learning Outcomes

Module 1: Foundations of Public Health

At the end of this module, participants should be able to: 

  • Describe the scope of public health
  • Explain the historical, ethical, and political context of public health as a discipline
  • Explain the principles that underpin population health practice, including the wider determinants of ill health and inequalities
  • Explain the impact on health status of wider social determinants using the socio-ecological model
  • Characterize public health issues through the lens of inequalities and social determinants
  • Apply the principles of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and early identification to common public health problems
  • Appraise the value of screening in typical public health contexts 

Module 2: Epidemiology Essentials

At the end of this module, participants should gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • the history of epidemiology and epidemiological research
  • measures of disease frequency
  • study designs
  • measures of association
  • application of basic mapping skills and tools for epidemiologic decision-making

Module 3: Infectious Disease 101

At the end of this module, participants should be able to:

  • Understand basic concepts related to disease transmission using the epidemiologic approach to communicable disease as a model
  • Define important terms related to the occurrence of infectious disease in a population
  • Calculate an attack rate and illustrate how it may be used to measure person-to-person transmission of disease

Module 4: HIV, STI, Hepatitis and HPV Prevention, Harm Reduction and Care

At the end of this module, participants should be able to 

  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge about the evolving epidemiology of HIV, STIs and Hepatitis B/C to both individual and population-wide aspects of clinical care
  • Understand the mechanisms and prevention of HIV, STI, and Hepatitis B/C transmission
  • Understand and apply current guideline/recommendations for HIV, STI, and Hepatitis B/C screening and diagnosis
  • Understand and apply current guideline/recommendations for treatment and care of patients with HIV, STI, and Hepatitis B/C
  • Understand and implement appropriate assessment/screening and management strategies for HIV, STI, and Hepatitis B/C complications
  • Evaluate and treat occupational exposure to HIV and Hepatitis B/C
  • Carry out counselling and education of patients with STI
  • Implement current prevention and screening strategies for chronic disease caused by HPV and Hepatitis B/C

Module 5: Disease Outbreak Response

At the end of this module, participants should understand

  • Key public health concepts in disease outbreaks
  • Early outbreak detection and rapid response strategies
  • The principles of incident management
  • Outbreak response monitoring for decision-making

Module 6: Fundamentals of Disease Intervention- STI Contact Tracing and Partner Services

At the end of this module, participants should understand

  • The principles of contact tracing/partner notification
  • The steps involved in the partner services process and recommendations for who should be offered partner services

Module 7: Idaho Infectious Disease Resources

At the end of this module, participants should be able to:

  • Identify government and non-government agencies/departments/partners involved in prevention, harm reduction and care as regard infectious diseases
  • Engage Idaho legal frameworks related to notifiable diseases as well as policies impacting disease transmission
  • Locate and use online Idaho-specific infectious disease resources

Module 8: Rural Health and Health Equity- Assets and Challenges

At the end of this module, participants should 

  • Appreciate potential challenges and opportunities in response to infectious diseases in rural communities
  • Understand the benefits of addressing infectious diseases in rural settings
  • Understand ways to build resiliency and reduce inequities in rural areas
  • Be able to leverage resources to advance equity in healthcare for infectious diseases in rural areas 

Module 9: Diversity, Inclusion, and Cultural Humility

At the end of this module, participants should be able to 

  • Engage the elements of diversity and inclusion and describe stages of diversity dexterity
  • Understand the concepts of culture, cultural competence and cultural humility and explore attitudes, skills, and knowledge that support diversity
  • Differentiate between cultural competence and cultural humility
  • Understand the awareness continuum, evaluate unconscious biases, and investigate ethnocentric and ethno-relative mindsets
  • Engage in knowing oneself to know others

Module 10: Communicating with Compassion

At the end of this module, participants should understand

  • The types of communication
  • Why communication skills are important
  • Ways to improve communication skills and communicate with empathy as a health professional
  • how behavior style and personal history impact communication with patients and community
  • Use of trauma-informed care and the Healthcare Provider Compassion Model
  • How to manage challenging communication situations such as difficult patient encounters, communicating unanticipated adverse outcomes, motivating patients to change, etc.
  • How to identify and manage microaggression and its consequences
