ISU to hold 13th Intermountain Gender and Sexuality Conference April 12-13

POCATELLO – More than 35 presenters from across the western United States will present at Idaho State University’s 13th Intermountain Gender and Sexuality Conference on April 12 and 13. The conference will begin at 1 p.m. on April 12 and 9 a.m. on April 13. Events will be held in the Rendezvous Complex Suites A and B.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Telling Our Stories” and focuses on shared gender performances from an interdisciplinary perspective. Presentations will take on the forms of dance, traditional academic presentations and performances. The schedule of presentations can be accessed at idahostategenderconference.info.

The conference will feature keynote speaker Rae Lynn Schwartz-DuPre, professor of communication studies at Western Washington University. Schwartz-DuPre specializes in feminist postcolonial theory, rhetorical studies and visual communication. During her keynote, she will discuss her current book “Curious about George: Curious George, Cultural Icons, Colonialism, and American Exceptionalism” and Curious George as an example of contemporary colonialism. She will present on April 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rendezvous Complex Suites.

On April 13 at 11:30 a.m., the conference will feature a Dine and Debate on the topic “The United States Should Reintroduce and Ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.” Audience members are invited to bring their own lunches or to pre-order a lunch for $15 at: https://idahostateu.com/GenderRegistration.

There will also be a Green Dot training at 1:15 p.m. on April 12 and is free and open to the public but requires pre-registration at https://idahostateu.com/GenderRegistration. The Green Dot training teaches participants how to spot potential violence and how to intervene.

The conference is co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Letters, the Departments of Communication, Media and Persuasion, Political Science, English and Philosophy, Global Studies, the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, and the ISU Rupp Debate Society; and supported by the ISU Cultural Events Committee as well as ISU Credit Union.
