ISU School of Performing Arts Presents Musical Comedy “The Marvelous Wonderettes”

Opening night will feature SOPA’s traditional Afterglow event following the performance, where audience members can mingle with the cast and crew and hear remarks from the director. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

This jukebox musical takes audiences back to 1958 at the Springfield High School prom, where four talented young women step up to save the evening’s entertainment. In Act II, the characters reunite ten years later to reflect on the changes in their lives and friendships. The production features a live orchestra in collaboration with ISU’s Music Department and includes beloved hits from the 1950s and ’60s.

Musical Director Dr. Geoffrey Friedley, Adjunct Instructor in Music at ISU, highlights the range of the score: “The songs in this show span doo-wop, teen pop, rock ’n’ roll, and soul. A song like Otis Redding’s ‘Respect’ is known to most of us through Aretha Franklin’s iconic recording, but two of our singers bring their own personality and pizzazz to this classic.”

Friedley also praises the versatility of the cast. “This show is unique among those I have worked on in that it requires each cast member to be both a strong soloist and a generous ensemble singer. Audiences will enjoy the rich three- and four-part harmonies throughout the production. I hope there’s something for everyone in this show.”
