Introducing ADA Title II Digital Accessibility Training for ISU Faculty

April 16, 2026

A major shift in digital accessibility is coming to higher education—and it directly impacts how courses are designed and delivered at Idaho State University. Beginning April 2026, new ADA Title II regulations will require that all university digital content, including Canvas courses, be fully accessible to all learners.

What Is Being Launched
To support faculty in meeting these expectations, ISU is launching a focused, practical training initiative this April. All faculty will be assigned two short courses designed to fit easily into your schedule while providing immediate value:

  • ISU ADA 101: Understanding ADA Title II
  • ISU ADA 102: Navigating New Title II Requirements

Each course is approximately 20 minutes, designed to be clear, applicable, and immediately useful within your teaching practice.

Together, these courses provide:

  • A foundational understanding of ADA Title II
  • A practical guide to applying accessibility in your digital course content

Why This Matters Now
New federal ADA Title II digital accessibility requirements take effect on April 24, 2026. These regulations require that all digital content provided by public institutions, including universities, is accessible to individuals with disabilities.

For ISU faculty, this means:

  • Your Canvas courses are part of the university’s public-facing digital environment
  • Course materials must be designed so all students can access, navigate, and engage with them
  • Accessibility is no longer reactive. It must be built into course design from the start

At its core, this is about equity in the educational experience.

A student should not encounter barriers because:

  • A video has no captions
  • A document cannot be read by a screen reader
  • A page structure makes navigation confusing or impossible

Accessibility ensures that every student has a fair and equal opportunity to learn.

What You Will Learn
ISU ADA 101: Understanding ADA Title II

This course answers the big picture questions:

  • What is ADA Title II?
  • What changed in the updated regulations?
  • What does “digital accessibility” actually mean in higher education?

You will leave with a clear understanding of your role and why accessibility matters across all digital spaces at ISU.

ISU ADA 102: Navigating New Title II Requirements
This course brings the concepts into your day-to-day work:

  • How accessibility applies to Canvas course design
  • Common accessibility issues in course content
  • Practical ways to ensure your materials are usable by all students

The focus is not on perfection, but on making informed, intentional design choices that remove barriers before they arise.

How to Complete the Training
The training will be assigned through ISU’s HR Talent Management System (TMS) during the week of April 20.

Steps:

  • Log into the Talent Management System via my.isu.edu
  • Locate the assigned ADA training under your Action Items
  • Click the provided link to access the courses in ISU Canvas
  • Complete both ADA 101 and ADA 102
  • Return to the Talent Management System to confirm completion. A separate sign-off is required for each course: ADA 101 and ADA 102.

A Shared Responsibility
Digital accessibility is not about adding extra work. It is about building courses that work for everyone from the start.

When accessibility is part of the design process:

  • Students engage more easily with content
  • Barriers are reduced before they become problems
  • Faculty spend less time retrofitting materials later

This training is the first step in supporting that shift. If you have questions about the training or how to complete it, please contact: training@isu.edu
