Call for Applications: General Education and Civics

The General Education Requirements Council (GERC) invites faculty teaching General Education courses to apply for participation in a course review and revision initiative focused on strengthening civic learning, civic knowledge, and/or civic participation within the General Education curriculum. This initiative supports faculty in revising an existing General Education course to incorporate a purposeful civic-focused assignment, module, or course component that advances General Education learning outcomes while remaining fully aligned with disciplinary content and course objectives.

Scope of Eligible Course Revisions
Proposals must focus on existing courses approved for General Education credit. Faculty may propose to integrate one or more of the following civic learning elements:

  • A required civic-focused assignment or project aligned with GenEd outcomes
  • A civic knowledge or civic participation module embedded withinthe course
  • Structured civic engagement or applied learning activities
  • Guided reflection connecting course content to civic contexts, public life, or democratic processes

All revisions must be discipline-appropriate, scalable across sections (where applicable), and suitable for inclusion in a General Education course serving students from multiple majors.

Faculty Eligibility

  • Open to faculty teaching approved General Education courses
  • Full-time and part-time faculty are eligible
  • Courses must be scheduled for offering in Fall and/or Spring.
  • Team applications for multi-section or coordinated General Education courses are encouraged

Faculty will receive a stipend of $1,200.

Application Components
Applications should include the following:

  • Faculty Information: Name, department, rank, and contact information
  • General Education Course Information: Course title and number; General Education category the course fulfills; Typical enrollment and number of sections offered
  • Proposed Civic Learning Component
    • Description of the proposed civic assignment, module, or activity
    • Explanation of how the civic component supports General Education learning outcomes
    • Identification of the civic knowledge and/or civic participation elements that students will develop
  • Statement of Interest
    • Brief explanation of interest in contributing to civic learning within the General Education curriculum

Applications will be reviewed using the following criteria:

  • Alignment with General Education learning outcomes and goals
  • Clarity, feasibility, and scalability of the proposed civic learning component
  • Appropriateness for a General Education audience
  • Potential for meaningful student learning and engagement
  • Breadth of representation across General Education categories and disciplines

Timeline

  • Application Deadline: April 15, 2026
  • Notification of Selection: May 1, 2026
  • Course Implementation:** Fall 2026/Spring 2027
