ISU Holds LOSA Student Safety Culture Training

Idaho State University, in partnership with the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), will bring Laboratory Operations Supervisor Academy (LOSA) Student Safety Culture to the university setting. LOSA, a program developed by Battelle Memorial Institute, is being adapted for the university environment. Participants will be given the opportunity to move beyond traditional lecture-based educational approaches and engage in realistic safety-related scenarios drawn from laboratory and research environments. 

The free course also introduces participants to Safe Conduct of Research (SCoR) protocols and principles, which promotes personal responsibility for safety through hazard awareness, open communication, continuous learning, and respect for potential risks. 

"This partnership with Idaho National Laboratory lets us bring INL's safety culture directly into the classroom, providing students an opportunity to engage in safety culture before ever setting foot in a national lab,” said Jared Cantrell, Director for Strategic Partnerships & Innovation, Office for Research at Idaho State University “We're not just teaching safety rules; we're building the habits and judgment that keep people safe for an entire career.”

Courses were held in Pocatello in late August and are set to be held in Idaho Falls on September 17 and 18. Refreshments and lunch are provided during the 4 hour sessions to all participants.
