ISU Faculty Featured in University of Wisconsin-Madison Art Showcase
October 1, 2026
This month, the University of Wisconsin-Madison will hold an art exhibition that spans three physical gallery spaces on campus as well as four decades of artists and academics. “How We Got It Together” is an exhibition of work by University of Wisconsin alums who have received graduate degrees since 1986 and which gathers paintings, ink work, ceramics, sculpture, performance art, photography, as well as personal life-work posters. The entire exhibit has a virtual catalog where all artworks and contributions may be browsed as well. What ties all of these pieces together? Of the over 100 contributions, every person represented in the show was mentored by retiring Art Professor Laurie Beth Clark. People whose work is shown in the exhibit did not only earn degrees in Art, rather, a wide variety of disciplines are represented such as those receiving PhDs, MA and MS degrees, as well as MFA degrees in Performance, Theatre, Art History, Spanish and Portuguese, among others. Overall, the show explores the questions, “What is the value of studying art, and how does it prepare people for rich, creative lives?” Clark, Professor Emerita, describes the show saying, “Taken together, the works in this exhibition demonstrate the ways that training in the arts enables creative production, critical thinking, and resilience.”
Dr. Marin Laufenberg of Idaho State University’s Department of Anthropology and Languages figures among the show’s exhibitors. Laufenberg graduated from UW-Madison with her PhD in Spanish with a minor concentration in Latin American Caribbean and Iberian Studies. While completing her graduate studies, Laufenberg took coursework on Trauma and Culture with Professor Laurie Beth Clark who later sat on her final committee for her dissertation, titled, Tempering Trauma with Humor in Argentine Post-Dictatorship Theatre: Laughing to Recover, Reimagine, Rebuild. In her poster contribution to the show, Laufenberg reflects that she is proud of, “her work cultivating future students of performance, theatre, and literature” which she is undertaking at ISU.
