From Subjects to Citizens: The Responsibilities of the American Experiment

August 21, 2026

As America marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, join Idaho State University President Robert W. Wagner for a timely conversation about the meaning of American citizenship.

The American Revolution transformed the relationship between people and government, replacing the idea of the subject with the ideal of the citizen. But self-government brings responsibilities as well as rights.

President Wagner will explore what that transformation meant in 1776, what the American experiment asks of its citizens today and the responsibility each generation carries for sustaining it into the future.

Wednesday, August 26 | 5:30 p.m.
Little Wood River Room | Pond Student Union

Presented as part of Idaho State University’s commemoration of America 250.
