Master Teaching Series: How Learning Works: Exploring Cognitive Load Theory, Memory Systems, Retrieval Practice, and Learning Versus Exposure and Performance
Presenter: Cynthia Collin, Biology Faculty at the College of Eastern Idaho
Date/Location: Tuesday, October 20, noon – 1 p.m.; ZOOM ONLY
Description: This workshop examines the science that explains how people learn. Participants will explore evidence-based approaches such as retrieval, spacing, and transfer and consider how learning can be strengthened through using these strategies intentionally, rather than simply through exposure to information. Most importantly, we’ll connect the research to the classroom: What does this mean for how we design content, activities, practice, and assessments? By the end of the workshop, participants will have practical strategies for designing learning experiences that help students not only understand information but retain it and use it beyond the classroom.
